Scalp biome: importance for hair health

What is the scalp biome?

In addition to hair and follicles, the human scalp hosts a diverse array of bacteria and fungi, forming its "microbiome." In a balanced state, these microbes play crucial roles in scalp health, maintaining pH, hair density, and nutrient access (Townsend et al., 2023).

Why is a healthy scalp biome crucial for hair health?

When the scalp microbiome becomes imbalanced, it can lead to conditions like itching, dryness, and flaking, with dandruff affecting over half the global population at some point (Grimshaw et al., 2019). This often results from an overgrowth of certain microbial species, causing oxidative damage to hair follicles.

Sensitive scalp is a common inflammatory condition, with up to 32% of hair loss patients experiencing it (Burroni et al., 2022). Telogen effluvium and alopecia areata are closely associated with sensitive scalp. This condition has reported to have significant prevalence rates globally, such as 57% in Chinese women and 44% in French individuals (Wang et al., 2023). Scalp microbiome imbalances are linked to sensitive scalp disorders, emphasizing the importance of restoring a healthy scalp microbiome for maintaining hair health.

Micellar Haircare and promoting a healthy scalp biome.

Micellar Haircare products harness natural coconut and zinc derivatives to bolster scalp defenses against microbial imbalances. By controlling excess bacterial and fungal populations, these products restore microbial balance, ensuring scalp health and ultimately promoting healthy hair.
