When people think about haircare, attention usually goes to the visible hair fibre — shine, softness, colour, breakage and styling.

But every strand begins somewhere else.

It begins in living scalp tissue.

The scalp is skin, with many of the same biological structures and functions found elsewhere on the body. It contains an epidermal barrier, sebaceous glands, immune cells, blood vessels, connective tissue and a dense population of hair follicles.

That means good haircare should not focus only on the hair that has already emerged from the scalp. It should also consider the biological environment in which that hair is produced.

The visible hair shaft is largely composed of keratinised material. Once it has emerged from the follicle, it is no longer living tissue.

The hair follicle beneath the skin is very different.
