Our Formulation Philosophy
Performance Begins With the Formulation
At Micellar Cosmetics™, we believe cosmetic performance cannot be understood from an ingredient list alone.
The identity and concentration of an active ingredient matter—but so do its physical state, solubility, stability, formulation environment, delivery vehicle, compatibility with other ingredients and behaviour after application.
For this reason, we develop products around the formulation as a complete delivery system, rather than treating the formulation simply as a carrier for individual actives.
More Than Active Ingredients
Two products can contain the same active ingredient at the same stated concentration and still perform very differently.
An active may be present, yet poorly solubilised. It may degrade during storage. It may crystallise, partition into an unsuitable phase, interact with other ingredients or fail to remain available after the product is applied.
The relevant question is therefore not simply:
“What ingredients are in the product?”
It is:
“In what physical and chemical environment do those ingredients exist, and how effectively can that formulation make them available where they are intended to act?”
This distinction is central to our approach.
The Delivery Vehicle Is Part of the Efficacy Equation
The formulation vehicle influences how an active is presented to the skin or scalp.
Its phase structure, solvent environment, surfactant system, oil composition, rheology and interaction with the biological surface can all affect release and delivery.
For difficult-to-formulate actives—particularly poorly water-soluble molecules—the delivery architecture can be as important as the active itself.
This is why Micellar Cosmetics™ places formulation and delivery science at the centre of product development.
Solubility Is Not the Same as Delivery
Getting an ingredient into a formulation is only the beginning.
A high-performance formulation must also consider whether the active:

remains solubilised throughout the product's life;

is protected against relevant degradation pathways;

remains compatible with the rest of the formulation;

is available for release from the vehicle after application; and
-
is delivered in a form capable of interacting with the intended skin or scalp environment.
Our development process therefore looks beyond nominal ingredient concentration to the state and behaviour of the active within the finished formulation.
Stability Is a Performance Requirement
A formulation cannot deliver its intended performance if its active ingredients or physical structure deteriorate before use.
We therefore regard stability as part of efficacy—not merely a manufacturing or shelf-life requirement.
Our formulation work considers physical stability, chemical stability, ingredient compatibility, pH, oxidation, light sensitivity and the structural behaviour of the delivery system over time.
The objective is not simply to make a product that looks stable, but to preserve the formulation environment required for consistent performance.
Tolerability Influences Real-World Performance
A technically sophisticated formulation has limited value if people do not want to use it.
Irritation, excessive residue, heaviness, tack, pilling, unpleasant odour or an impractical application routine can reduce adherence and therefore reduce realised performance.
We consequently treat sensory quality and tolerability as functional formulation variables.
High-performance cosmetics should be scientifically credible, but they should also be elegant enough to use consistently.
Formulation Architecture Before Ingredient Fashion
Cosmetic development is often driven by the latest high-profile ingredient.
Our approach is different.
We first consider the treatment objective and then determine the formulation environment required to support the relevant actives.
This may involve balancing:
solubility → stability → compatibility → delivery → tolerability → application
Rather than maximising every ingredient concentration, we aim to build a coherent system in which the components work together.
Evidence Should Follow the Finished Formulation
Published research on an ingredient provides important biological rationale, but it does not automatically establish the performance of every product containing that ingredient.
The finished formulation matters.
Our evidence philosophy therefore follows a progression:
Ingredient rationale → formulation characterisation → stability → safety and tolerability → instrumental assessment → consumer use → controlled substantiation
The further a claim moves from ingredient theory toward product-specific evidence, the stronger its relevance to the finished treatment.
A Platform Approach to Cosmetic Development
These principles led to the development of our Green Micellar™ formulation platform.
Rather than creating a collection of unrelated product bases, we have developed a common formulation architecture that can be adapted across multiple skin and hair treatments and product formats.
This allows us to approach product development systematically—using formulation architecture as the foundation and selecting actives according to the treatment objective.
One principle underlies everything we develop:
